The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) is preparing an upgrade Smart City plan, which has to been to be submitted to the Centre by April 15.
The authorities held meetings with representatives of C40 Cities Alliance, a network of megacities, and discussed ways to address issues of urbanisation in the context of Smart Cities Mission.
The main points that came up included integration of cycling and bus transportation for faster travel and segregated solid waste system to attract the recycling industry.
The meeting heard that the projects should be tailored to meet the projected population growth of New Town in the next five years.
The idea of an integrated cycling and bus transport system calls for building a special attachment to the bus where a passenger can fix the cycle and retrieve it on reaching the destination.
The need to integrate the city’s specialist departments such as electrical, including energy, transport, bio-technology and police was highlighted as part of intelligent city planning.
