The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has approved the Rs 11 billion upgraded Smart City Proposal (SCP) at its special meeting.
The meeting was headed by city Mayor Surendra Furtado.
The proposal includes Rs 5.47 billion as state and central share, Rs 3.97 billion as the share to be raised through public-private partnership, Rs 889.2 million to be funded through central government schemes like Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), and Rs 670.8 million pertaining to operation and maintenance cost.
Altogether 19,639 citizens, which form approximately 50 per cent of the city population, were consulted during the SCP preparation for Panaji. The SCP includes area-based developmental initiatives as also pan city initiatives.
The CCP is also trying to raise funds for the Smart City through the Swadesh Darshan scheme of the Union Ministry of Tourism. The revised proposal would be forwarded to the Union Urban ministry through the fast track mode by April 10.
The highlights of the upgraded SCP include smart parking with automated parking meters wherein car parking tickets would be linked to city buses, cycles and ferryboats; part pedestrianisation-part cycle track provision for the Church Square roads; Patto Cultural Zone for various cultural activities, improved quality of life for urban poor in the Mala heritage zone; and development of butterfly garden, bamboo corner, lake restoration, herbal garden and mangroves plantation in the city under the biodiversity conservation.
The SCP further addresses the aspect of inclusiveness, as also basic services like roads, water, sewer lines, electricity, city transport and infrastructure.
