Goa government, which has given approval for Panaji Smart City proposal, can hope to succeed in its endeavour only if it is led by an honest and efficient team of councillors, says a top union cabinet minister.
India’s Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, who was Chief Minister of the state before taking over the Union Cabinet post, said implementation of the Smart city scheme requires vision and determination.
After casting his vote in the Panaji Municipal Corporation election, the minister said for execution of Smart City projects the state needs a good team.
“If people give a good team (then the), Smart City (project) will be done well,” said Parrikar, who was Chief Minister of Goa from 2012 to 2014. “For a Smart City you need a council with integrity,” he added.
The Smart Cities Mission is a project of the central government to develop modern infrastructure and use technology in 100 cities with a view to transforming them into citizen-friendly and sustainable places.
The Union Urban Development Ministry is responsible for implementing the mission in collaboration with the state governments.
Goan capital Panaji is one of the cities selected for the Smart City project.
