Bhopal City’s Smart City project has hit unexpected hurdles with two prominent social groups raising environmental concerns over the proposed development at Shivaji Nagar.
Bhopal Citizen Forum (BCF) convener HK Bhawnani said after studying the project it feels it would cause environmental damage. Owing to proposed construction, some 30,000 trees are at risk in the area.
“Government quarters at Shivaji Nagar and Tulsi Nagar may be developed keeping the height of building up to 100 foot and avoid felling of trees,” he said.
The BCF also suggested changes in Smart City sites. It is reported that some BCF representatives were also irked over the fact they were not invited to the Smart City discussions.
The National Centre for Human Settlements and Environment (NCHE) has joined BCF in expressing concerns regarding the selection of the sites for Smart City.
